The Association between Anemia, Iron Deficiency Anemia and active Helicobacter Pylori Infection among Dyspeptic Patients

The relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been the subject of conflicting reports. We have assessed the prevalence of H. pylori infection as the cause of anemia and IDA in patients with dyspepsia, given the high prevalence of H. pylori infection. The study was conducted in Pakistan from August 2024 to December 2024, involving individuals aged 15 or older who reported symptoms such as epigastric discomfort, burning, abdominal bloating, nausea, or vomiting. The study used an organized survey to gather information about age, gender, health record, drug usage, and medication duration. Each participant had their erythroid-related indices and iron deficiency (ID) markers measured, and H. pylori was detected. Endoscopic evaluations were performed to identify the cause of persistent gastrointestinal blood loss. Statistical analyses were performed using Windows version 25.0 and SPSS. The participants were 54.2% women and 55.8% males. The majority had anemia, with 64.8% having it. There was a significant difference in anaemia prevalence between sexes, with men having a higher incidence. H. pylori was present in 82.86% of the participants. There was no statistically significant change in the rate of H. pylori infection with age between the ages of 20 and 60. The outcomes of the logistic regression after adjusting for gender and age-adjusted odds ratios followed an identical trend. H. pylori infection seems to be associated with anemia, and IDA among dyspeptic patients.
